Are HID's Legal
As a professional auto electrical wholesaler we cannot guarantee that when you fit your HID's to your vehicle that it will be legal. ADR have many specific rules that can be applied if necessary. The RTA in each state also has a big say in what is legal and what is not. The main issue is for your passing beam, or low beam. You do not want to blind on-coming traffic, so ADR have specific rules on the angle of a passing beam. There are also sub-clauses for "vehicles which carry a load", assuming that this rule applies to trucks, whereby if the angle of the beam goes above a certain trajectory, (because of the load,) automatic, or manually operated leveling devices must be fitted. It seems to be at the discretion of the RTA as to what particular vehicle fits into the category of a "vehicle which carries a load", sounds convoluted to me. Colour temperature is another issue, ADR specify that the HID must be in the category of a white light. A white light is anywhere between 5000k and 6000k. Also...from my limited knowledge, it has been said that you cannot do any electrical work on your vehicle at all, this includes changing a light bulb. So....The conclusion? responsible driving is the key, don't put HID's on your vehicle that are too bright on low beam, and get them fitted by a qualified auto electrician.
